IP Telephony

IP Telephony has now "come of age" and is the obvious choice for telephony for both new locations and upgrading existing sites. In addition to reducing costs, IP telephony can deliver significant benefits to organisations in terms of increased productivity, quicker decision making, and more satisfied employees and customers.

IP telephony uses the power of the network to deliver feature rich voice communications that are suitable for small businesses, as well as global enterprises and all organisations in between. A powerful, flexible core telephony infrastructure coupled with a comprehensive range of IP Phones provide secure, reliable, scalable communications using a business LAN and WAN. Flexible deployment models make it simple to provide the same capabilities for all users whether they are remote, at a branch, at the headquarters location, or mobile.

As the foundation for IP telephony is a standards-based architecture, it is easy to build and integrate business-specific applications to add additional value to any investment in IP Telephony.

What is Voice over IP?

Voice over IP, or Voice over Internet Protocol to use the full title, is simply a means of making telephone calls over a data network instead of over the traditional analogue public switched telephone network (PSTN). The term VoIP describes the use of the Internet Protocol (IP) to transfer speech between two or more sites.

Inherent to the term is the management of the protocol. In general, this means that the voice information is encoded into discrete digital packets and then transferred over an IP-based network. There are many advantages to this method of telephony, primarily the cost savings that can be made by avoiding the use of the traditional PSTN. In addition to cost savings, the digital nature of VoIP allows easy administration, implementation of additional services such as voicemail, and a reduction in the physical cabling required for new installations.

VoIP offers a number of potential advantages and benefits to its users:
  • reduced operating cost, including lower telecom charges;
  • flexibility;
  • reduced infrastructure;
  • integrated services and superior user features.
